HISTORY OF MOGA

MOGA's History

In 1949, Horace Godfrey, a Forest Service district ranger in Seeley Lake, established the Western Montana Outfitters and Guides Association to improve communication with local outfitters. This organization evolved into the Montana Outfitters and Guides Association (MOGA) in 1960 and later became the Montana Outfitters and Dude Ranchers Association. By the early '70s, several outfitter organizations existed in Montana, and in May 1974, their leaders agreed to merge into a single association, adopting the name Montana Outfitters and Guides Association. MOGA then drafted a new constitution and bylaws, held its first Winter Convention at the Yellowstone Inn in Livingston, and elected Bob Hart as its first president.
